For Authors: When You Want to Give Up

by | Dec 6, 2023

Sooo, you’re seconds away from throwing in the towel on your writing dreams.

You’re working harder than ever, but you’re not seeing any results. And no matter how “positive” you try to be, whenever you sit down to write, the voices in your head say, “You’ll never make it,” “It’s too late,” “Your books will never sell like they used to,” “The only reader you’ll ever reach is yourself,” or “Everyone thinks you’re a joke.”

With an inner critic like that, it’s easy to see how you got here, and I get it. (I’ve been there before.)

But you know what?

Before you go through with your plan and crown your inner critic the Dream Killing Queen, I humbly ask you to give up a few other things first

Give up frantically worrying about the results.

Give up being mean to yourself.

Give up trying to impress your peers.

Give up chasing the illusion of perfection.

Give up trying to please everyone.

Give up crying over things you’ll never be able control.*

Give up on those things first.

Let go of them little by little, day by day…

And over time, with each new page you write, two amazing things will occur.

1.) You’ll wonder why you didn’t give up all of those things before.

2.) You’ll see that by doing so, you’ll have more time to focus on your dreams, and those are never worth giving up. (No matter how hard it gets.)

Until the next cup of tea,
Whitney G.

P.S. By the way, thoughts like “I don’t see a point in publishing anymore,” “People hate my words…Why continue?” and “I’ll never be who I want to be so I might as well give up now” are 100 percent normal.

But they’re just thoughts.

They don’t weigh anything, cost anything, and they definitely won’t bring you anything of value.

Let them roll by in your head like a short summer rainstorm and give up on letting them have more than a few minutes of your time.

*As far as things you can’t control: Your publishing past is a rerun. You’ve already lived through all the episodes. You know exactly what happened (even if you don’t know why), and there are no new plot twists or “OMG what?!” moments on the horizon.

No matter how many times you hit play.

Move forward, clear the slate.

It’s time to create some new episodes.
