Let’s dive into this spicy and suspenseful book called Pretty Cruel Love, shall we?

Sooo we begin this pretty cruel love story with a headline that tells us what Sadie Pretty has done, BUT…

She swears she didn’t do it. She’s been locked up for quite a while, and although she refuses to cry (on the outside), she’ll tell you herself that prison is practically a shit hole. She words it more beautifully in chapter one, but between the mildewy walls, metal beds, guards who treat her like an animal, and the lack of air conditioning…

Yeah, total shit hole.

Anyway, she finds out that she’s been selected to take part in “The Cabin Experiment” with the high-profile behavioral therapist, Doctor Ethan Weiss. 

One look at his ocean blue eyes in the warden’s office, and she’s aroused beyond belief, and she can tell from the crackling tension in the air that he is, too…And then he actually reaches out and touches her lips. (*Not a spoiler, by the way. It’s literally here in chapter 1.*)

Her acceptance into this program has to be a sign from the universe. Between this, her appeals, and legal experts discovering that certain things in her conviction don’t quite add up, she can practically taste freedom. 

It doesn’t last long, though. 

Fast forward through a few spoiler-y things, and she finally arrives at the cabin to see Dr. Weiss. 

He lays down the rules, but he already broke the first one (No touching whatsoever) on the day they met, so she’s a bit confused…

He’s just as confused, though. He’s never been attracted to one of his patients before, and this woman has a flashing “DANGER: STAY BACK” neon light flashing on her forehead. So much so that he spends a lot of time resisting and shutting himself in his room alone, even though his mind remains tethered to thoughts and fantasies of things he wants to do to her…

Even though no one else is convinced of her innocence and thinks this is a waste of time, he’s determined to help her through the daily therapy sessions & case research.

*Fast forwarding through some ‘you’ll-have-to-read-the-book-and-see’ stuff*

With every passing day in the cabin, we get simmering tension, longing looks, a certain ‘OH-EM-WHOAAA” dominant scene where he has to put her in her place, secret off-camera touches, and words that neither can say aloud…

*Why can’t they speak freely?

Oh, right.

Everything in the cabin is monitored and recorded 24/7 by a team of mental health professionals, behavioral specialists, and of course, prison staff since Sadie is still the property of the state.

The more the doctor looks into her case, he can’t help crossing the line between his therapist duties and playing part-time detective. Something was amiss, and he could feel it from day one. He could see it in her eyes. 

He can also see that she’s about to be his first “failure,” because he can’t stop fantasizing about what it would be like if he did cross the line, if he gave in to the wanting and “I’ll never tell,” gazes from her eyes. And he knows he’s already deeply fucked up by giving her something to remember him by when she leaves…

Alas, their days together are dwindling with every passing hour, and one night, when something unexpected happens, the morality line washes away in the sand.

And it never gets redrawn. It never reappears.

He makes her a promise and assures her that he’ll never break it, that he’ll find a way to see her again after the experiment is over.

Somewhere between him continuing to abandon his morals and showing her all the ways he’s good for her body (and her mind) …

We get hit with a WHAT THE FUCKKKKK?!!!! PLOT TWIST

And then–Okay, wait. That’s enough for now.
